When I moved into a new home in 2019, I found myself standing in a beautiful but complex space. The great room had open-beam ceilings and angled walls that widened toward a prow. It was stunning—but not an easy space to arrange.
So, like many people do when facing uncertainty, I followed the previous owner’s layout.
It didn’t take long to realize that the borrowed design wasn’t just about furniture placement. It symbolized something deeper—how we often operate using old patterns, outdated expectations, and inherited systems that no longer serve us. Especially after big changes—starting a business, building a dental team, or stepping into leadership.
The room looked full, but felt cramped. It wasn’t relaxing. It wasn’t me.
Eventually, I sketched out new arrangements, asked for help, and made intentional shifts. The change was immediate. The space felt open, functional, and alive. It reflected who I was becoming—not who someone else had been.
And that’s when I realized: this was a perfect metaphor for how dentists lead and grow in their practices.
Dental Coaching Isn't One-Size-Fits-All
As a Dental Coach, I’ve seen how many dental professionals unconsciously operate from inherited systems:
- Outdated ways of leading and communicating
- Rigid expectations of how teams “should” behave
- Beliefs about what patients want—or how they’ll respond
- Systems and structures that simply don’t work anymore
Even when dentists are committed to growth, they often try to evolve by rearranging the same old pieces:
- Enrolling in courses
- Listening to podcasts
- Copying what other "successful" practices are doing
But transformation requires more than shifting old pieces.
It requires a custom layout—one that aligns with your values, goals, and leadership style.
What If You Moved Just One Thing?
Whether it’s in your practice or your mindset, a small shift can spark big change. Start by experimenting with just one area:
- The patient flow in your dental practice
- Team hand-offs or case presentation language
- Your money mindset around insurance and fees
- Adjustments to the daily schedule for better productivity
Then ask yourself:
- How does this space—or system—feel now?
- What else might I shift in my practice, home, or mindset?
- What technology or systems could support our growth?
- What’s holding me back from my next level?
These simple questions can open the door to powerful breakthroughs.
Why Custom Dental Coaching Matters
Every dental practice is unique. That’s why customized coaching is so essential.
As Coach Heidi Mount, I help dentists look beyond templates and cookie-cutter advice. Instead, we focus on what actually works for you—your strengths, your team, your community.
Your journey is shaped by:
- Diverse personalities and skill levels within your team
- Complex team dynamics
- The procedures you love to do (and the ones you don’t)
- Operatories, technology, and your physical space
- Market trends, financial goals, and personal passions
There’s no single “blueprint” for success in dentistry. That’s why personalized, strategic coaching is the game-changer.
If you’ve been operating from a mindset or system that no longer fits—it’s time to make a change.
